Title
A Roman pottery body sherd from a Samian mortarium.
Description
English: A Roman pottery body sherd from a Samian mortarium, Dragendorff 45 (AD 170 - 250). The mortarium has a near upright wall, and there is an offset at the junction of the upper and lower walls accentuated by a ridge. The remains are visible of a spout in the form of a moulded, open-mouthed lion was applied to the outside of the upper wall. It is surrounded by incised radiating lines. Horizontal grooves decorate the lower wall. The tituration grits, giving the mortarium its internal grinding surface, occupy the lower part of the vessel and there are mostly pale grey quartz. The grit was applied before the slip and much of the slip has been abraded through use. Dimensions: weight: 2.17g. Reference: Webster, P. 1996. Roman Samian Pottery in Britain. CBA, York. Pp.55-6
