Title
a Roman nail cleaner
Description
English: A cast, copper alloy Roman nail cleaner dating from AD43-200, Crummy type 2a. The blade is of a pointed leaf shape, tapering gently from rounded shoulders to two points. The division between the points continues up one side of the blade as a central groove; the other side is unmarked. There is a circular suspension loop, set at right angles to the blade and separated from it by a baluster moulding. The nail cleaner has a smooth, dark brown patina. It is 58mm long, 14.3mm wide and 12.5mm thick. It weighs 7.8gm.

A similar nail cleaner is illustrated in Crummy, 1983, The Roman Small Finds From Excavations in Colchester 1971-9, page 58, number 1872.
