Title |
a Roman nail cleaner |
||
Description |
English: A cast, copper alloy Roman nail cleaner, probably dating from the second or third century, 100-300AD. The blade is straight, flaring out at the top into a broader oval. At the top of this oval section is a centrally located, circular knop, separated from the main body by a small collar and groove. The knop probably extended into a suspension loop, but instead has a patinated break at the apex. The underside of the cleaner is plain; the upper side is decorated with a single ring and dot design located in the centre of the oval area. On the upper side, the two cleaning blades are separated by a tapering groove. The cleaner has a dark green patina. It is 47.7mm long, 17.3mm wide and 3.4mm thick. It weighs 4.16gm.
A similar cleaner is illustrated in Crummy, 1981, Colchester Archaeological Report Number 2, figure 67, number 1941. |
