Title
a Roman headstud brooch
Description
English: A cast, copper alloy Roman brooch of the headstud type, dating from AD75-200. The bow is quite narrow, tapering slightly from the junction with the wings to a circular foot. Above this foot is a pair of transverse ridges separated by a narrow groove. In the centre of this groove is a small, circular depression which may be intentional and may have held enamel. The main body of the bow also bore a design: although wear and corrosion has rendered this largely illegible, it may have been a zig-zag or diamond pattern. There are small traces of red enamel remaining along one side of the bow. There is a plain circular integral headstud and two short wings, in the centre of which are the remains of a head loop, now broken. Each wing is decorated with two narrow vertical grooves containing red enamel. The remains of a ferrous pin bar and pin remain in the tubular wings; the rest of the pin and most of the catch plate are missing. The brooch has a rough, light green patina. It is 58.2mm long, 22.7mm wide and 12.8mm thick. It weighs 13.16gm.

A similar brooch is illustrated in Hattat (2000), Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches, figure 191, number 36.
