a Roman headstud brooch
Description
English: A cast, copper alloy, Roman brooch of the headstud type, dating from 75-200AD. The bow is narrow with flat sides, each side being decorated with a series of interlocking triangles containing traces of red and blue enamel. The stud is missing; only the mounting hole is visible. The wings are short and broad and each wing is decorated with a small, raised hemisphere of metal that has a central dot surrounded by a ring of red enamel. In the centre of the shoulder of the bow is a short, flat ridge, through which is passed the end of the wire spring mechanism. The pin bar, the spring, of six coils on each side, and part of the pin remain in place, as does the catch plate. There is an oval foot, which is hollow. The brooch has a patchy, dark green patina. It is 48.6mm long, 22.2mm wide and 26.2mm thick. It weighs18.54gm.
