Title |
A Roman enamelled umbonate brooch |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy Roman umbonate brooch, dating from the 2nd to mid-3rd century. The brooch comprises a circular plate, which is domed and has a hollow back. A suspension loop with a circular perforation projects from the brooch at one end, whilst a damaged semi-circular lug projects at the other end concealing the catchplate behind it. There are two further lugs projecting from the circumference of the brooch on opposing sides of the brooch. There is a circumferential groove on the front of the brooch which encloses a raised circular area which has been divided into four enamel cells by a four petalled floriate motif in copper alloy. Each cell is filled with blue enamel. At the centre of the motif is a further cell in the shape of a annular ring which is filled with red enamel. On the back of the brooch, the pin which is intact, is held in place by two semi-circular lugs pierced to support the axis bar. The catchplate is worn but visible. The brooch has a diameter [from suspension loop to foot lug] of 31mm.
A similar brooch can be found illustrated in Mackreth (2011, Pl. 109; no. 11588). |
