A Roman copper alloy plate brooch, 2nd-3rd Centuries AD.
Description
English: A Roman copper alloy plate brooch, dating from the 2nd-3rd centuries. the brooch is formed of a flat oval with two concentric raised bands. In the centre of these bands there would have been a glass intaglio, which is now missing. Between the two bands, surrounding the intaglio there are traces of green enamelling surviving. on the flat reverse there is a pierced lug, through which the pin would have been hinged. there is also the remains of the catch plate, although the pin is missing. the brooch is 26.9mm long, 20.4mm wide, 2.6mm thick, and weighs 5.6g.
