Title
A Roman cast copper alloy Trumpet brooch dating from the 1st to 2nd centuries AD.
Description
English: A Roman cast copper alloy Trumpet brooch dating from the 1st to 2nd centuries AD. The object consists of a trumpet head and an arched bow terminating in a foot knob. The bow diminishes frontally towards the foot with a button at mid-bow. At the back of the head is a rearward lug which would have held a sprung pin. The pin is missing and the catch plate is broken.

There is one cross moulding above and one below the central button. The head is decorated with three small circular depressions within a larger circle on both the left and right sides of the head. There are two more circular depressions, one on either side of these both of which are filled with a bright orange enamel. Just above the upper cross moulding are two more depressions. These are all surrounded by a series of incised lines. There are two horizontal triangles of black enamel on one side of the head.

The central button decoration is decorated with five horizontal leaf like projections.

On the lower part of the bow an incised line borders two more depressions which would have contained enamel. There are sideways facing triangles of black enamel below this and two more empty triangles further down. There are five cross mouldings on the foot. It is likely that all of the depressions would have been filled with enamel. The object is in very good condition.
