Title
A Roman cast copper-alloy fly brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman fly brooch. The brooch is missing its hinged pin and the catch plate is damaged. In plan the brooch has a central raised rib forming the bow, running the length of the brooch from the head to the foot and narrowing in the middle. At the head of the bow is a cell which previously would have held enamel. The ‘fly’ shape derives from the triangular wings which flare upwards from the brooches foot on each side of the central rib. Each wing has sub-triangular cells which would have held enamel. The foot in profile has a sub-rectangular shaped protrusion, giving the brooch an almost S-shaped profile. This type of brooch dates from the 2nd century AD.
