Title
A Roman Knee brooch
Description
English: A cast, copper alloy Roman Knee brooch, dating from AD150-250. It is undecorated, except for a single, semi-circular transverse ridge separating the semi-circular foot from the remainder of the bow. The bow is widest at the shoulder, tapering towards the foot and, less obviously, towards the pin. There are two short, rectangular wings; part of the left hand wing has broken away and is missing. The upper edge of the wings projects above the bow; the lower edge is integral with it. Beyond and between the wings is a vertical, square section of metal, drilled with a circular hole to hold the axis bar of the sprung pin. This vertical section projects above the wings and immediately above them is grooved (or has a slot) to hold the external chord. The pin is missing. The catch plate remains; it is rectangular and projects backwards from the foot. The brooch has been cleaned, but traces of a light green patina remain visible. It is 39.6mm long, 15.6mm wide and 20.6mm thick. It weighs 10.63gm.

A similar brooch is illustrated in Hattat, Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches, figure 195, number 1238.
