Title
a Roman Colchester brooch
Description
English: A cast, copper alloy Roman brooch of the Colchester type, dating from 25-60AD. The bow is narrow and tapers to a point, above which are the remains of a catch plate. There is a broad, lateral groove along the bow in which the remains of a pattern can be seen, though this is very corroded. On the shoulder of the brooch is a short, raised transverse ridge which continues on to the head. One of the wings is missing, but the other carries four turns of the spring and pin mechanism. A fragment of the pin remains in place. The brooch has a dark brown patina. It is 76mm long, 18.2mm wide and 27.9mm thick. It weighs 13.27gm. A similar brooch is illustrated in Hattat, Visual Catalogue, figure 155, number 14.
