Title
English: A Rail Car Slipped Off the Rails, Nov. 9, 1917
Description
English:

A photo showing a disabled rail car.

The car was loaded with 100 bales of cotton for the Boott Mills. This challenging section of curved track was one of many tight turns in the densely packed city. Originally sited to take advantage of waterpower before railroads came into use, each mill was eventually served by railroads to carry in raw materials and coal. This section of track and its "S" curve is still in use. Lowell NHP trolleys travel this section of track (and manage to stay on the track) on daily runs between the Visitor Center and the Boott Cotton Mills Museum.
