Title
A Post Medieval ivory knife handle, 17th century
Description
English: A Post Medieval bone or ivory (osseous material) handle probably from a knife dating to the 17th century. The solid handle tapers from the butt to the blade end where the width decreases from 15.23mm to 9.99mm. Each side is gently curving with a slightly flattened upper and lower edge creating a truncated oval in cross-section. There is no decoration on the handle. At the butt there is a separate copper alloy knop; originally there may have been an end-plate but there is no remaining trace of one. There is a metal collar, possibly copper alloy, at the junction between the handle and the shank. Beyond the collar is a lump of iron corrosion and concretions leaving little evidence of a knife blade or evidence of another utensil for which this could be a handle. There is a crack along the length of the handle.

Dimensions: length of handle: 61.41mm; width: 15.23mm; thickness: 7.55mm; weight: 15.53g.

Identification and dating by Tony Pilson and Ian Smith based on foreshore context.
