Title
A Post Medieval iron fragment of a knife with remains of a wooden handle and a copper alloy hilt band (17th century).
Description
English: A Post Medieval iron fragment of a knife with remains of a wooden handle and a copper alloy hilt band (17th century). The hilt band is a reused thimble that has a triple line border below the pits and fine, regular circular pits; the top of the thimble has been irregularly trimmed. When the object was found all the elements were tightly fitted together, now they are loose.

Egan suggests that as the blade is very thin its function may be for precision work.

Dimensions: diameter: 17.47mm; length: 48.95mm; width: 12.48mm; thickness of blade: 1.45mm; weight: 6.35g.

Identification and dating by Tony Pilson and Ian Smith based on foreshore context. Further identification by Geoff Egan, PAS Finds Advisor Medieval and Post Medieval Artefacts.
