Title
A Post Medieval copper alloy thimble (17th century). LON-425DE5
Description
English: A Post Medieval copper alloy thimble (17th century). This thimble has tall, straight slightly tapering sides and a domed peak. The pits are rectangular and have been drilled in a spiralling pattern. The pits stop just over halfway along the length of the thimble. There appears to be a rectangular stamp at the end of the pits which may be a maker’s mark but it is unclear and difficult to make out any detail. Beneath the pits there is a band of stamped decoration. It is a repeating motif of a six-pointed star within an oval pelleted border and with a further pellet between each star motif. Beneath this band of motifs there is a border of pellets and leaves forming a wreath.

Dimensions: Diameter at base: 18.44mm; Diameter at peak: 14.17mm; length: 24.52mm; weight: 3.7g.

Identification and dating by Tony Pilson and Ian Smith based on foreshore context.
