Title
A Post Medieval copper alloy ring-type thimble (17th century). LON-C858A4
Description
English: A Medieval copper alloy thimble (14th century). The thimble has a narrow margin between the base and the pits; it is decorated with two parallel grooves. The pits are hand-drilled evenly and none are completely perforated. There is a larger central pit at the peak of the dome, followed by a border with no pits and then smaller pits have been drilled in three concentric rings. Below this the pattern changes – the pits are larger and are drilled in vertical lines. There is no maker’s mark visible. The copper alloy has no patina.

Dimensions: Diameter of base: 17.19mm; length: 12.71mm; weight: 3.58g.

Identification and dating by Tony Pilson and Ian Smith based on foreshore context.
