Title
A Post Medieval copper alloy ring-type thimble (17th century). LON-C858A4
Description
English: A Post Medieval copper alloy ring-type thimble (17th century). This tailor’s thimble has been created by removing the top from a regular thimble. The holes have been regularly drilled in concentric rings. Below the holes is a plain border defined by a groove and a ridge. The walls are straight and the diameter tapers slightly towards the upper edge. There is no evidence of a maker’s mark. There is a cut mark near the upper edge where the thimble has been cut down and the upper edge is uneven.

Dimensions: Diameter: 19.95mm; length: 12.61mm; thickness: 0.69mm; weight: 2.94g.

Reference: Holmes, E. Sewing Thimbles. Datasheet 9. Finds Research Group 700-1700 Datasbeets 1-24. 1985-1998. Reprographic Unit, University of Oxford. Identification and dating by Tony Pilson and Ian Smith based on foreshore context.

Notes: “Ring-type thimbles leave the end of the finger free and are designed for the needle to be pushed with the side of the finger. In general, terms, ring type thimbles are used for heavier work. Tailors traditionally use a ring type thimble Holmes (1985-1998: datasheet 9)
