Title
A Post Medieval copper alloy decorated thimble dating 1550-1620.
Description
English: A Post Medieval copper alloy decorated thimble dating 1550-1620. The indentations are rectangular and have been hand stamped in a spiral pattern radiating from the peak of the thimble. The peak of the thimble rises to a sharp point. There is band at the junction between the peak and the walls where there is a break in indentations and there is a plain band with a double band of parallel incised lines. The indentations then continue to spiral down the walls of the thimble. Below the indentations but above the rim there is a band of stamped decoration, with a linear border above and below. The stamped decoration appears to comprise the repeated pattern of two crescent-shaped stamps arranged to form a circle. There is no evidence of a maker's mark at the end of the indentations. The shape of thimble is slightly distorted due to crushing and there is a crack in the wall.

Holmes (1988:3) illustrates similar thimbles which are from Nuremberg and date 1550-1620.
Dimensions: length: 16.96mm; thickness: 0.38mm; weight: 1.40g.
