Title
A Post Medieval cloth seal
Description
English: An incomplete lead cloth seal dating to the Post Medieval period (c. AD 1550 - 1650). The seal is circular in plan with a jagged edge suggestive of where an attachment has broken off. The remains of a stud can be seen on the back of the seal. The face of the seal depicts a raised design of a stylised pinecone on an anchor or a tree, with the pinecone made up of a series of raised dots. On either side of the central design are five raised dots in a cluster to the left and seven raised dots in a custer to the right. The remains of a bead and line border can be seen on the outer edge below the anchor.

Discussion: A similar pinecone motif can be seen on record number IOW-A34685 where Basford (2016) suggests the design represents the heraldic badge of the city of Augsburg, Germany. He discusses that the pinecone is associated with the cloth trade owing to its sometime interpretation as a teasel. Basford goes on to suggest that the history of the arms of Augsburg have also resembled the tree of life before 1260 and a bunch of grapes until the 15th centry when the grapes were replaced by a cone. The motif on this cloth seal could easily resemble all three.

The overall dimensions are as follows: 17.59mm in diameter, 3.06mm in thickness and 5g im weight.
