Title |
A Post Medieval Crotal Bell |
||
Description |
English: A complete cast copper alloy Post Medieval animal rumbler bell, also known as a 'crotal' bell. The upper hemisphere is undecorated. The lower hemisphere has been decorated with the characteristic incised 'sun burst' design. The centre of one half of the sunburst has part of a cross whilst the other half of the sunburst on the other side of the sound slot has the letters "W G". There are two sound holes on the upper half placed perpendicular to the sound slot on the lower half.The bell has a raised circumferential join connecting the two hemispheres. The loop is rectangular with an oval perforation and seems to have been integrally cast. The corroded iron sound 'pea' is moving freely within the bell. Cracks extend from either end of one of the sound holes to each end of the sound slot on the partial cross side. |
