Title
A Post Medieval Chain
Description
English: A copper alloy chain of probable Post Medieval date (c. AD 1700 - 1900). The chain consists of 18 individual oval loops of non-uniform size each with a butt joint. Each link (except for the two end ones) is attached to two of its neighbours in both directions. A single, circular loop has been linked with the 7th and 8th loop (the central point) and sits externally to the chain. Several of the links are open. Each link is curved to enable the chain to lie flat. The loops have a dark to light green surface patina.

As Scriven (2018) states, the object is not a fragment of mail because each link is too large, the links are not riveted, and they are not in a four to one pattern (Scriven 2018, taken from Edwin Wood, PAS Arms and Armour training notes, 2018).Comparable examples recorded on the PAS database include: HESH-30AE97 and SWYOR-CA87E6.

The overall dimensions are as follows: 137.92mm in length, 20.78mm in width, 6.56mm in thickness and 41.17g in weight.
