Title |
A Post Medieval Bridle Bit |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy barley twist mouthpiece from a horse's two-piece snaffle bit dating to the Post Medieval period (c. AD 1700-1900). The object is comprised of a bar with loops at opposing ends. One loop is complete and the other has just under half remaining. The bar is square in cross-section and has been twisted in its design. No other decorative features are apparent. The object has a dark green patina.
Dudley (2019) states that 'The bar would have been attached to another matching bar at one end, forming the actual bit which went in the horse's mouth, and to a ring cheek piece at the other end, which held the strap for the reins and another for the bridle.' A comparable matching pair are CORN-72542C and CORN-1B250D. The dimensions are as follows: 94mm in length and 23mm in width.
