Title
A Post Medieval - Modern ivory knife handle fragment or manufacturing waste product.
Description
English: A Post Medieval - Modern ivory incomplete object (probably 16th-18th century). The object is a pointed oval in plan with a D-shaped cross-section so the reverse is flat and the front convex. The rounded end is complete and has been worked to form a rounded point. There is an oval perforation at this end that may be deliberate or accidental. It is centrally aligned at the end of the object and has smooth edges from the front surface. When viewed from the rear the sides and edges are rough and appear to be damaged. The rear surface also has a pointed oval shallow depression with horizontal striations; this appears to be definitely deliberately worked. The object then tapers towards the break. The object appears to be burnt as the ivory is blackened and cracked in places. The object may be knife handle fragment similar to no. 403 found in London (Egan 2005:93) or it may be manufacturing waste.

Dimensions: length: 65mm; width: 17mm; thickness: 8mm; weight: 5.22g.
