Title
A Modern Badge
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy military badge dating to the Modern period (c. AD 1800-1900). The badge is roughly circular in plan with the centre of the face slightly domed. The badge depicts the garter band inscribed with HONI. SOIT. QUI. M[AL]Y PENSE, translating from Middle French as 'Shame on him who thinks evil of it' (Brundle 2020). The garter encircles the domed main body of the badge, which appears to depict a set of initials: possibly SR. The reverse of the badge is convex in the centre and flat around the edge. There do not appear to be any marks suggesting attachment points on the reverse of the object. The badge has a dark green patina.

A comparable example can be seen on the PAS database in record NLM-9841E9. Here Foreman (2019) suggests that such a badge could have come from a shako or cartridge case rather than from clothing.

The overall dimensions are as follows: 49mm in length and 46mm in width.
