Title
A Medieval book clasp
Description
English: A Medieval copper alloy book clasp (late 14th-early 15th century). The book clasp has been cast and decorated to resemble a bird in plan. The terminal has a rectangular profile with a horizontal perforation that forms the head and beak. There is a thick, flat oval section with a central perforation - the body of the bird. This is decorated with a curvilinear pattern depicting feathers. There is a moulded horizontal bar extending across the width of the clasp before it expands towards the split end to form the tail. Here the decoration reflects long parallel tail feathers. The decoration is clearly highlighted in the remaining gilding. The reverse is flat and undecorated. In the split end are two rivet holes, one in each corner. Only one rivet still remains in the hole.
  Patchy pale green patina, with dark grey metal showing through. It is similar to No. 925 found in London, but this example is not hinged (Egan, 1998).

  Dimensions: Length 71.40mm; Width 22.09mm; Thickness 9.02mm; Weight 41.23g;
