Title
A Medieval Trade Weight (back)
Description
English: A complete lead-alloy trade weight of Medieval to Post Medieval date (c. AD 1380 - 1600). The weight is shield shaped with a raised circular knop in the centre and an indented border running around the edge. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The metal has a mid-brown patina and is worn.

The overall dimensions are as follows: 50mm long, 37mm wide, 11mm in thickness and weighs 118.51g.

Oakden (2017) states that shield-shaped weights are a distinctive group of trade weights which are used from c.AD 1380 and continue into the 15th century. She argues that it can be difficult to date shield-shpaed weights owing to longevity and numerous designs, however, 'some belong to the period following the conversion of the trade pound under the averdepois system and as such it is likely that these weights represent a desire to standardize the trade weight system' (Ibid.).
