Title
A Medieval Thimble
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy thimble dating to the Medieval period (c. AD1300-1500). The object is cone shaped in form with a round base, which has since been compressed slightly due to being in the ground. The sides taper inwards to a slightly domed apex. There are eight rows of circumferential spiralling indentations or pits up the sides and three rings of similar indentations on the top, with a plain circle on the very apex or crown. The surface has a dark green patina. The base has two ribs running around the circumference. The base is cracked, chipped and missing in places.

See Egan (1998: 267) nos 830-1 for similar examples. Egan states that no Medieval thimble dating from before the 14th century has yet been found in England. Several comparable examples have also been recorded on the PAS database, including: YORYM-A62C6A; NARC-E7B0AD; and WMID-5EBBD7.

The dimensions are as follows: 18mm in length and 23mm in width.
