Title
A Medieval Stud
Description
English: A cast copper alloy heraldic stud, dating to the medieval period AD 1250-1400. Originally flat, the surface has been bent backwards on one side. The shape is a square-topped shield with an integral rivet protruding from the centre of the back. The rivet is square in section and tapers slightly towards the side-bent end. The front face has worn moulded decoration in the form of a lion rampant, with traces of blue (azure) enamel in the background. The metal has a mid-brown patina and is worn. The face of the stud measures 29.43mm in length, 23.45mm in width, including the rivet, is 19.61mm thick and weighs 11.75 grams.

Heraldic studs were used to decorate harness and other straps as well as scabbards and even tombs and were most popular from the later 13th to 14 centuries (Griffiths 1989:1). There are many similar examples on the database including <a href="http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/451006">YORYM-9D9A41</a>, <a href="http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/276765">SUSS-150504</a>, <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/918187">YORYM-0CF1C2</a>, <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/922974">DOR-EF69A3</a>, and <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/930555">ESS-E875C2</a>.

Similar mounts are also illustrated in Griffiths (1995, p.70, fig.53).
