Title
A Medieval Spur
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy rowel from a spur dating to the late Medieval period (c. AD 1350-1400). The object is sub-circular in form and consists of a central circular section with a drilled hole for attachment to the spur. From the central circle the teeth radiate out and taper to rounded points. The teeth are defined on the central circular section by incised grooves. Nine out of the sixteen teeth remain in situ. The rowel has a dark to mid-green patina.

Comparable examples recorded on the PAS database include: NMS-63CF7E;  PUBLIC-139B7B; and IOW-D8FA17. Each record comments that rowels of this style became popular in the latter half of the 14th century.

The overall dimensions are as follows: 58mm in length and 64mm in width.
