Title
A Medieval Seal Matrix
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy seal matrix dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1300-1400). The object has a hexagonally faceted conical handle, terminating in a rounded suspension loop above a single ridge. The suspension loop is pierced with a circular hole. The die is engraved with the head of a stag, facing forward, with a cross between its antlers. The stag with a cross is associated with Saint Eustace and Saint Hubert (Baker 2020; Booth 2016). The ede of the matrix is chipped thus obscuring much of the legend. The remains of the legend read: [...] STIS [...]. The object has a dark green patina.

Comparable examples with the same design but different inscriptions include: SF-261A16 and NCL-8172E9. Leahy and Lewis (2018: 139) comment that some seal matrices were not made for certain individuals but rather produced with standard designs for general consumption, this example appears to be one of those.

The overall dimensions are as follows: 21.04mm in length, 15.23mm in diameter and 4.24g in weight.
