A Medieval Purse Bar
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy purse bar dating to the period c.1450-1500. Consisting of a horizontal bar with central globular boss, and a vertical bar running through the boss. The globular central boss on the horizontal bar is pierced centrally with a fragment of the vertical bar including the globular stop remaining on the underside. On both sides of the bar are two tabs projecting down from the bar, each with a two circular piercings which have both now completely worn through. Both ends of the horizontal bar are rounded, and show some signs of tapering although the original ends are now lost to old breaks. Above the tabs, the bar is decorated with double lined lattice work within a double border, with niello inlay still present. The central boss is engraved with a 'W' on one side and 'X' on the other also inlaid with niello.
The horizontal bar measures 135.7 mm in overall length, with each side of the central boss measuring 59.8mm and 59.4mm respectively. The entire piece is 19.05mm thick with a weight of 52.6g

It is a Ward Perkins (1940: 165, fig. 50) type A2 which he dates to 1450-1500.
