Title
A Medieval Purse
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy purse suspension loop of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (c.1450-1600 AD).

The suspension loop is sub-oval in plan, and D-shaped in cross section. The suspension loop consists of an oval loop, with the sides tapering into a rectangular collar. The shank that would have originally extended through the purse bar, is incomplete and has broken just below the collar.

The loop measures 34.3 mm in length, it has a maximum width of 17.8 mm and is 5.8 mm thick. It weighs 5.7 grams.

The loop is a mid green colour with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

Oval purse suspension loops are typically found on the later variants of the purse bar, Ward Perkins / Williams Types C, E & F (Ward Perkins, 1940, figs 50&52 & Williams, 2018) and typically date to the Late 15th to 16th Centuries AD.
