Title
A Medieval Mount
Description
English: Treasure Number: 2017 T766

PAS Database number: LIN-931987

Period: Medieval

Date of Discovery: April 2016

Circumstances of discovery: Metal detecting on cultivated land

Description: An incomplete silver sexfoil mount in the form of a flower. The mount is domed, with a central engraved circle at the apex and each petal extending from the apex detailed by engraved lines. Each of the lobes of the petals has a small dip in the centre of the edge. The face of the mount has also been gilded. The reverse of the mount is concave in the centre and flattened out towards the edge. From the centre of the reverse projects an integral rivet which terminates in a worn break. Some of the gilding on the face is also apparent on the reverse.

Dimensions: 17.77mm in diameter, 5.81mm in thickness and 2.69g in weight.

Discussion: this style of mount can be dated to the Medieval period, specifically the 13th to 16th centuries AD. A number of similar examples of cinquefoil and sexfoil mounts in the form of flowers have been recorded on the PAS database. Some examples that more closely match the mount in discussion here include: a silver cinquefoil mount found in Haveringland in Norfolk (Anonymous 2011); a silver sexfoil strap fitting found in St. Mary Bourne in Hampshire (Williams 20212); and a copper alloy sexfoil mount found in Cold Hanworth in Lincolnshire (Brown-Warr 2017).

Conclusion:

In conclusion, this object constitutes a prima facie case of treasure by consisting of more than 10% precious metal content in that it is silver and gold, and is of an antiquity greater than 300 years.
