Title |
A Medieval Casket Mount |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy casket mount, of Medieval dating (AD 1150 to AD 1300).
The mount is formed by a long slender rectangle which has a moulded terminals. The terminal is in the form of an elongated knop protruding from the side of a moulded sub circular platform which has a rivet hole in the centre, still containing a rivet. A curved incomplete hook extends from the lower knop. Below each rivet hole there is a moulded narrowed collar. The body of the mount is otherwise undecorated and is sub-triangular in section. It measures 53.3 mm in length, 8.1 mm wide and 19.5 mm thick (including hook), 4.8 mm thick (not including hook). It weighs 9.9 g. The mount is a mid brown colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail. Egan (Egan G. 1998 The Medieval Household Daily Living c. 1150-c.1450 Museum of London, London, The Stationary Office) illustrates similar mounts, particularly No. 147, however this example is curved in profile, whereas the recorded example is, mainly, flat. Egan (1998) comments that transverse ridge decoration is usually found on mounts dated to the earlier Medieval period, the 13th century.Another similar example is No. 139 (ibid) and this is dated to the later 12th centry. The surface condition of the mount may suggest this earlier date, but this cannot be certain. The mount therefore dates to c. 1150 to 1300 AD. A similar casket mount has been recorded on the PAS database as WAW-0DD498. |
