Title
A Medieval Buckle Plate
Description
English: Half of a Medieval copper-alloy hinge dating from about 1300 - 1500. The plate is sub rectangular in plan, taller than it is wide, and has been constructed from a single sheet plate folded over to form the front and back plates; the back plate is smaller than the front plate. Two slots have been cut into the folded edge. These would have articulated with the folded edge of the other hinge plate. The axis bar is missing. The two plates of this part are joined by two copper alloy rivets in the middle. The rivets are side by side, the heads of both are sub rectangular at the front; on the back their heads are slightly domed and sub circular. A similar hinge was found in 14th or 15th century deposits at Bedern in York. These fittings are believed to be from small boxes or caskets. See Finds from Medieval York p. 2842, ref. 14243. Compare also NCL-2BBB33 and GLO-21B481.

Alternatively, the object could be a buckle plate from an unusual buckle with two pins. Please see PAS record ID: BH-243BA6 and WAW-07A545. It is possible these are hinges which have been misidentified as buckles.
