Title
A Medieval Brooch
Description
English: A complete copper alloy annular buckle dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1150-1450). The frame of the buckle is circular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. The pin, which remains in situ, is formed of a single strip of copper alloy curved around the frame in an open loop on one side and tapering to a rounded point to rest on the frame on the opposing side. There is no constriction for the pin.

A comparable example recorded on the PAS database is YORYM-20735C. In this record Egan and Pritchard (2002, p.64-65) have been referenced stating "a constriction on a single frame to limit the movement of the pin is generally an indication of a brooch rather than a buckle". As such the find recorded here is more likely a buckle than a brooch owing to the lack of constriction.

The overall dimensions are as follows: 16mm in length, 18mm in width and  1.9g in weight.
