Title
A Medieval Axe
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy axe of probable Medieval date (c. AD 1000-1500). The head of the axe is sub-triangular with two wavy edges, flaring to the cutting edge. There is a pointed projection at the back of the axe head. The shaft extends from the head tapering to a break. Three holes have been drilled into the head of the axe though it is unsure whether these holes are decorative or functional. The metal has a light brown patina and is worn.

The overall dimensions are as follows: 54mm long, 40mm wide, 4mm thick and weighs 16.57g.

Whilst the function of this miniature axe is not known, Griffiths (2016) has suggested that miniature axes dating to the Medieval period may represent miniature weapons of combat and acted as favours during tournaments.
