Title
A Medieval – Post Medieval cast copper alloy knife end-cap dating c. 1475-1600.
Description
English: A Medieval – Post Medieval cast copper alloy knife end-cap dating c. 1475-1600. The cap is in the form of a stylised horse’s hoof. It is sub-oval in cross-section and curves throughout its length. The terminal end is largely flat and is in the form of a horse shoe comprising a central groove representing a frog, there is a punch marks on one side denoting a nail-head and a pair of calkins that protrude slightly. At the opposite end a rectangular slot is filled with the remains of a corroded iron tang. Around the side of this face there is small rib forming the top of the hoof. On the outer face and sides there are two wide and shallow grooves. These grooves do not extend fully to the rear face. The object has flecks of a mid-green patina and the surface colour of the metal is dull reddish brown.

Other knife end-caps in the form of a stylised horse’s hoof are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database for example IOW-F16917; HESH-2CEAE4. An excavated parallel is noted in Egan 2005: 93, ref: 398 from a late 15th - early 16th century context.

Dimensions: length: 16.22mm; width: 11.50mm; thickness: 8.15mm; weight: 5.57g.
