Description |
English: Two men hurl ink-pots at each other in a Committee Room of the House of Commons; a chair overturns (left) and the table with its green cloth tilts over. Both are very thin, the younger (right), who has short hair with a whisker, and wears short gaiters, has hurled an ink-pot from which pens scatter, above the head of his opponent. The other (left), who wears powdered hair with a short pigtail, raises his ink-pot, and is about to hurl it. They are Sir James Shaw, M.P. for the City, and George Holme Sumner, M.P. for Surrey. One (right), apparently Shaw, says:

Notes |
(Description and comment from M. Dorothy George, 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum', IX, 1949) There is no record in the 'Commons Journals' or 'Parl. Debates' for 20 May 1814 of a Committee on a Post-office Bill, but the question was discussed in Common Council on 24 Mar. 'Examiner', 1814, p. 204. The 'Fracas' was the subject of an epigram in the 'Scourge', vii. 506 (June 1814). Reid, No. 333. Cohn, No. 1326. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. ![]() |
