Summary
[edit]DescriptionA Lady, Princess Mary? by Hans Holbein the Younger.jpg |
English: Portrait of a Lady, possibly Princess Mary. Black and coloured chalks, pen and Indian ink on pink-primed paper, 38.6 × 29.1 cm, Royal Collection, Windsor Castle.
The drawing is in a ruined state, since virtually all the original lines have been obliterated by rubbing and by redrawing in an inferior hand. Holbein's left-handed strokes are discernible, however, in the fall of the headdress. The sketch was probably never more than slight and summary. The possible identification of the sitter as Princess Mary, the future queen, derives from the inscription of an etching made by Wenceslas Hollar in 1647 (see "Other versions" below), when the drawing was in the collection of Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel. Scholars have differed on the accuracy of this identification, some believing the sitter looks too different from the Mary painted by Antonis Mor. Others believe that the drawing could well be of the princess. K. T. Parker, in his study of the Windsor drawings, wrote: "A further word of caution should be spoken against a too hasty rejection of the drawing as a likeness of the future Queen. In 1536, when Mary was temporarily reconciled to her father, her age was twenty, which is approximately that of the girl portrayed, as far as can be seen from the drawing in its present condition. The magnificence of her jewellery, moreover, would speak for a person of exalted station" (Parker, p. 48). Reference
