A LIQUID CHLORINE BARGE, AFTER BREAKING LOOSE FROM ITS TUG BECAME LODGED AGAINST THE MCALPINE DAM ON THE OHIO RIVER AND COULD NOT BE SET FREE (English)
A LIQUID CHLORINE BARGE, AFTER BREAKING LOOSE FROM ITS TUG BECAME LODGED AGAINST THE MCALPINE DAM ON THE OHIO RIVER AND COULD NOT BE SET FREE. IF THE TANKS ON THIS BARGE WERE PUNCTURED, THE LIQUID CHLORINE WOULD TURN INTO A POISONOUS GAS THAT COULD DEVASTATE MUCH OF THE NEARBY CITY OF LOUISVILLE. THE AREA WAS EVACUATED FOR 24 HOURS UNTIL THE BARGE WAS STABILIZED AND THE CHLORINE SAFELY PUMPED FROM ITS TANKS BY AN EMERGENCY TEAM FROM THE OFFICE OF EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS. A MONITORING SYSTEM TO DETECT CHLORINE LEAKAGE WAS SET UP BY THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY, AND THE COAST GUARD AND ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS WERE CALLED IN TO SUPERVISE OPERATIONS (English)
