Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Kutiyattam, also spelled koodiyattam, is one of several forms of historic Hindu temple theatre found in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is a group performance by two or more actors. The theme is classical dance or drama performance, aided by musicians. The stories are from Hindu epics and Vedic legends, with Ramayana, Mahabharata and Krishna Lila particularly popular.

The theatre site is typically a separate mandapa in the temple, or one linked to a nearby historic temple. The Kutiyattam rules and mudras are found in regional Sanskrit texts dated between the 8th and 14th century. Related to the Kutiyattam is Kuthu, which is a solo performance rather than a multi-actor performance.

Kutiyattam and other art forms were a family tradition, often where daughters or sons or both would learn the art from their parents or biological relatives, aided by schools associated with a Hindu temple. Some famous artists, however, emerged from royal families where the artist directly learnt the art at the temple school. Kutiyattam is mentioned in many South Indian Hindu temple inscriptions, often with festivals and special events over the temple's history.
