English: From the source:
Pen-and-ink and wash drawing by an Indian draftsman of a figure of Jvalamalini in the Virupaksha Temple at Pattadakal, from an album of 31 folios of drawings of sculpture in the rock-cut caves and temples at Aihole and Badami, dated 1853. The sculpture is placed in the vestibule of the Virupaksha temple at Pattadakal which was built around 745 under the Early Chalukya dynasty. Jvalamalini is a Jain yakshi, a semi-divine female being, mentioned in the Digambara Jain texts. She is depicted seated on a basement on which her vehicle, a buffalo, is carved but now mostly defaced. The yakshi is eight armed and richly decorated with ornaments. Her crown is carved with a miniatue relief of a Tirthankara. She holds, from the lower right arm, an arrow (bana), a trident (trisula), a disc (cakra), a sword (khadga), a bow (dhanus), a whip (kasha), a conch (shankha). Her left hand is damaged. Jwalamalini, Jvalamalini, Chandraprabha Tirthankara |
