Summary
[edit]DescriptionA Historic View across the Gap in the Chiltern Hills - geograph.org.uk - 1353511.jpg |
English: A Historic View across the Gap in the Chiltern Hills. This view is a "reverse" view - looking back to wards the place where 1345079 was taken - and identifying the same historic features from the other side.
The picture was taken from the Ridgeway National Trail which is said to follow the route of a 5000 year old track. A short distance behind the photographer is the Iron Age Grim's Ditch Immediately in front of the photographer is the Duchie's Piece Nature Reserve 1347745. The hedge at the bottom hide an ancient bridleway 1210267. To the left of the picture is the Horsechestnut Avenue which hides another ancient track 1210255. Northfield Road then runs across the picture and may date from an 18th century enclosure. The hedge on the left beyond the Avenue 1345308 follows the line of the ancient track and ends with the bridge over the railway line 1345094. A large wheat field lies beyond the railway line and the far hedge hides the cutting containing the Grand Union Canal 1340285. The parkland beyond the canal is part of the Pendley estate and it hides the line of the Roman Road (Akeman Street) which became a turnpike in the 18th century and the A41 in the 20th century. Cut into the hill, and not visible from this angle is the modern A41 184047 - which bypasses Tring. |
