[edit]DescriptionA Hindu temple ruins at Lakkundi, Karnataka.jpg |
English: From source,
Photograph of the south-west of the Kashivishveshvara Temple, Lakkundi taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s. Lakkundi is situated in the modern state of Karnataka. The Kashivishveshvara Temple was built in the late Chalukya style and dates to the 12th Century. It is a Hindu shrine and is also known as the Kashivishvanatha temple. Henry Cousens wrote: "The most elaborately finished of all those in the village...In this temple the Chalukyan builders reached their high watermark in decorative architecture...This is a double temple, that is, it has a second shrine facing the main building on the east, but separated from it by a raised platform, which was, perhaps, at one time, an open hall roofed over. This style of double temple is not frequently met with..." The basement is adorned with friezes of elephants and lotus petals and the walls have pairs of pilasters capped with temple-like reliefs and prominent niches with sculptures with sharply carved details. The tower on the western sanctuary is still partly standing. The doorways are decorated with bands of scroll-work along the jambs and figures of divinities at the base. |
