Summary
[edit]DescriptionA Himalayan Marmot in the valleys of Northern Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir.jpg |
English: A Himalayan Marmot (Marmota himalayana)standing on its hind legs, posing for curious shutterbugs and wildlife lovers. The species, when fully grown, can be of a size of large house cat. They are closely related to the groundhog or popularly, called as woodchuck.
Marmots predominantly inhabit in the alpine grasslands among the Himalayan valleys and on the Tibetan Plateau at elevation from 3,500 to 5,200 m (11,500 to 17,100 ft) above Mean Sea Level. It lives in colonies and excavates deep burrows that colony members share during hibernation. Currently, as the locals say, the population of this species has been drastically dwindling due to unregulated ingression of tourists and the rapid loss of their natural habitat. This photo was shot while en-route to Pangong Lake from Leh during my trip to Ladakh.English: A Himalayan Marmot (Marmota himalayana) in standing posture in the valleys of Ladakh. |
