Description

A Gull tries to take a baby Pied-billed Grebe chick today. A Pied-billed Grebe family (two adults, four two-week old chicks) were present at the pond in the Cloisters City Park in Morro Bay, CA 13 May 2013.

The Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) is a species of the grebe family of water birds... and is primarily found in ponds throughout the Americas. Other names of this grebe include American dabchick, dabchick, Carolina grebe, devil-diver, dive-dapper, dipper, hell-diver, pied-billed dabchick, thick-billed grebe, and water witch... per wiki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pied-billed_grebe

Dawn Beattie tells the story best at her photo essay at www.flickr.com/photos/pics4dawn/8737068672/ “A young gull trying to take out one of the baby pied-billed grebes. It may not have been successful, however, as a PWC [Pacific Wildlife Care www.pacificwildlifecare.org/ ] volunteer showed up soon after with a live baby pied-billed grebe that someone had picked up near the pond, reported it to PWC and handed it off to them. The volunteer was trying to reunite the baby with its family. Mike Baird offered to hop over the overlook's fence for the volunteer, which she accepted. He hopped over, took the grebe out of the box and placed it in the pond. A short time later, all six grebes were seen together - two adults and 4 babies.”
