Description |
English: Political satire; a fanciful open carriage, pulled by stags, with three tiers of Frenchmen, the "Sindicl", "Grande Garde" and "Adjoint", all with horns, a woman riding behind with a bag full of horns on her back, and a banner at the front exhorting the women to wake up, not to be angry that the sun has risen, and to laugh with the men in the carriage; above is written "Des Cocu's Francois!". c. 1791

Notes |
This pastiche is based on a series of prints by Laurent Guyot showing carriages bringing deputies to the National Assembly in May 1789 (De Vinck 1442-1445; all in BM together with another not in De Vinck, 1998-7-12-71); it is closest to De Vinck 1445. For Holland's copies of French prints in 1791, see S. Turner, 'William Holland and French Revolutionary Prints', Print Quarterly, XV, 1998, pp. 193-195. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. ![]() |
