| Description |
English: A Euro-wasp nest - Pendomer The Euro-wasp, or Dolichovespula media, build their nests outside - such as this one - in the hedge. These wasps are larger than our British wasp and because they have to defend their open-air nests they seem more aggressive if disturbed and give a larger sting. They arrived from France about 20 years ago and are now widely distributed throughout the country. Not to be confused with a hornet.
This nest was on a footpath and the inhabitants had already chased someone without ill effect so the District Council were informed and came out to exterminate them. The entrance to the nest is the round dark hole at the base. |
