Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A Durisdeer gravestone for the Revd George Wallace This gravestone in Durisdeer Churchyard is unusual in that it records the death of the local minister who expired in the pulpit while conducting a Sunday service. There is a warning in the inscription, suitable for the times, for the flock to take heed. The inscription reads:-

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THE REVD GEORGE WALLACE, MINISTER OF DURISDEER WHO DIED IN THE PUBLIC DISCHARGE OF HIS HIGH CALLING UPON SABBATH THE 17TH SEPTR 1854 IN THE 65TH YEAR OF HIS AGE AND 39TH OF HIS MINISTRY

He lived beloved and died deeply lamented by his friends and flock. Let his sudden call be a warning to the living to set their houses in order and to prepare to meet their God.

Also George Wallace second son of the Revd G Wallace who died at Otago New Zealand 24th September 1858 aged 20 years. Also James eldest son of the above who was lost at sea 1853 aged 23 years. Also Matilda Lennock widow of the above who died at Beyrout 22nd May 1879 aged 73 years.
